4 Days, 4 Guys, 1 Cabin!
Growing up, I remember watching the music video for ‘Tom Sawyer’ by RUSH. The entire video takes place in the dead of winter, in a log cabin recording studio as Alex, Geddy & Neil are laying down this epic track.
I remember thinking how cool it would be to just go away for a while and do exactly that.
Well over 20years after first seeing that iconic video, I found myself packing my bags and drums (so many drums) for a four day getaway complete with some great dudes, great food, drum recording, an A-frame cabin in the woods and even a little snow.
For those that don’t know, Im the drummer and musical collaborator for Andrew Judah (www.andrewjudah.com) and we are currently working on our second record together. The four days spent in this cabin were for the purpose of tracking the drums. It was on me to record 5-6 songs off the new album and I had an entire four days to do it! Sounds easy…well it would be if Andrew composed normal music..but this stuff is WAY out of the ordinary. I call it exquisite. I know I’m biased in saying that, but it really is. You should go take a few minutes and listen to our last record and everything before that - you will soon see and hear what I’m talking about.
On the second night there, after the sounds had stopped and the recording equipment turned off for the evening, Andrew and I had a great conversation below the stars about how insanely blessed we are to be able to do this sort of thing. As grown men, our actual jobs are to make, create and in my case teach music.
When I was a young boy watching that RUSH music video, I was dreaming of one day doing that, and now here I am. The feeling is hard to nail down in words, so all I can really do is express thankfulness.
Everyday I teach, I want to be encouraging those who come to BTN that they are allowed to pursue things that make them happy and more importantly bring others joy. If it puts a smile on someones face, brightens up a day and causes others to do the same, then do it! I sure hope that that’s what I’ve been doing.
